ZAS was tasked by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to design a campus master plan that embodies RIT’s vision as a global institution.
The project’s innovation lies in taking a highly complex building program and translating those needs into a unique and innovative design solution, ensuring a distinct identity for each partner.
With the city of Toronto continuing to grow in population, the city will grow vertically, meaning the need for this type of education/community facility will be vital.
The design team’s challenge was a complete exterior façade rehabilitation and interior re-planning of an existing one-storey industrial building to reflect the holistic philosophy of the school.
The design of the school is organized around a collective assembly space referred to as the Student Forum, which is the social, physical and psychological centre of the school.
The “Healthy” mandate goes beyond simply physical activity and includes a concern for environmental quality and the health of the wider environment.
This multi award-winning campus is one of the first of its kind in Canada combining post-secondary programs with hands-on on- site training specific to the aviation industry.
