University of Al-Jabal Al-Gharbi Gharyan Campus

Creating a campus with a distinctive character with collections of buildings which look and feel embedded into the landscape.

Gharyan Campus is the main campus of the University of Al-Jabal Al Gharbi. This masterplan responds directly to the topography of the site, creating a campus with a distinctive character with collections of buildings which look and feel embedded into the landscape. The new University campus environment is a vibrant place for living and learning, responsive to the needs of technology, yet making reference to local and historic building typologies and traditions represented in a truly modern and sustainable way. The organic quality of the natural materials contained within the site inspired our masterplan for the development of the university. The principal shared facilities constituting the ‘heart’ of the campus are located at the centre of the site beneath a landscaped deck. The large overhanging structure of the deck above creates shade, while enabling larger areas of glazing to be created. These are maximized to make the most of views out across the orchard to the valley beyond.
