Toronto Montessori College

The simple clarity of the plan, creates dynamic interior spaces with visual overviews throughout, resulting a light-filled and comfortable environment.

When growing demand convinced the Toronto Montessori Schools organization to built Canda’s first Montessori Secondary College, they approached ZAS to design an inspiring facility capable of supporting the program’s future success. Charged with this mandate, the design team’s challenge was to conceive a 2 storey facility that reflects the holistic philosophy of a Montessori-based education. After extensive consultation with the College’s Steering Committee, a three phased design emerged. The building was located as far west on the industrial side of the site as possible while an outdoor play field and extensive planting were introduced on the east side to be sensitive to the existing residential neighbourhood facing the school. The school’s social life is enhanced and encouraged by the creation of a highly daylite student gathering “square” that connects all of the school’s public spaces such as the cafeteria, gym and library with an outdoor courtyard. The simple clarity of the plan, creates dynamic interior spaces with visual overviews throughout, resulting a light-filled and comfortable environment.
